Where to look for help

The best place to look depends on what kind of help you need:

  • If you're doing research and need to know where to find a particular piece of information, or just want the answer to a trivia question, try Wikipedia:Reference desk.
  • Are you a contributor who wants to get help with the editing process and understanding Wikipedia's policies and guidelines? If so, ask a question at Wikipedia:Help desk.
  • Visit the Teahouse if you are a new editor looking for interactive help. Ask questions about using Wikipedia and volunteers will respond as soon as possible.
  • Ask about technical issues at Wikipedia:Village pump, which is a page where folks especially knowledgeable about Wikipedia hang out. The village pump is a metaphor for a place where lots of people gather to discuss interesting topics.

For all the time and effort you have put in — across thousands of edits — to markedly improve numerous articles related to Christianity all these years. The magnitude of the positive impact you have had with regard to Wikipedia's coverage of academic topics related to Christianity is unprecedented; I cannot think of any other editor who has worked so rigorously and improved those topics to the extent that you have. You are still the one I will reach out to when I have a problem, but you have taught me a lot, and this article was just too much to ask someone else to do for me. I would have enjoyed banging my head against a wall more, but hey, I followed your example and got it done. Question from InquisitiveALot (21:01, 22 July 2024)

[edit]

Hello Jenhawk. I worked on a new page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:Ramallah_Friends_Meeting_(Quakers) It has been declined twice and I am not exactly sure why. I have used creditable sources, including books and university papers. Yet people say that the sources are inadequate. Thank you in advance for any help you might offer. --InquisitiveALot (talk) 21:01, 22 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry for the delay. I have been on an unplugged week. I will look at it and get back to you. Give me a couple of days. Jenhawk777 (talk) 16:36, 26 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for letting me know and thank you in advance. Hope that it was a good 'unplugged' week. InquisitiveALot (talk) 18:40, 26 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
InquisitiveALot Okay, I went and took a look, and the objections stated are legitimate by Wikipedia standards. These are WP standards: [[1]]. The problem is that you only have four sources, and one of them is a master's thesis. I went to Google scholar, typed in Ramallah Friends meeting, and found a few other more scholarly sources that would probably be usable. I recommend what the other reviewers have already recommended: this article needs more and better sources. I also recommend adding something on why this is a notable enough topic to be included on Wikipedia. Perhaps you might consider adding this content to Ramallah Friends School - if they are connected in any way. That would skip over the problems of publication as a new article.Jenhawk777 (talk) 04:12, 29 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for your thorough response.
I have added further sources as well as further in-line references to the draft. Concerning adding it to the Ramallah Friends School, despite having a common early history, I do not believe that it would be proper or accurate to have them connected via one article.
You said to add why it would be a notable topic. Where would I add such an explanation?
One thing I am confused about is how there are many articles on Wikipedia which are just 1 or 2 sentences and lack any sources or references. (As I have been trying to add references to some of those articles when able.) InquisitiveALot (talk) 12:21, 29 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
No problem, happy to help. Some established editor has probably created those short articles with the hope someone else will come along and do the work for them on a topic they think is important enough to be here but not important enough for them to take the time to do properly. Some editors like to have a list of articles they created without being concerned about quality. How that happens is simply that they have created and published without going through the approval process that first articles require. Those two-sentence articles should be nominated for deletion imo, even though they don't really fit the criteria described here Wikipedia:Articles for deletion because they can be fixed through normal editing. It's still pretty cheesy, and lazy, and if you can fix them, and are willing to do so, please do. If not, nominating them for AfD is certainly reasonable - imo. As to notability, put it in comments to the reviewers after checking this Wikipedia:Notability which mainly says there needs to be adequate sources. Good luck. My first article was turned down - twice I think - before finally being published. Don't get discouraged. It happens to nearly everyone. The idea is to learn what WP looks for in a good article, and knowing that will make you a better editor for every article hereafter. Jenhawk777 (talk) 17:37, 30 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for the detailed reply and explanation. Have a wonderful week. InquisitiveALot (talk) 20:57, 30 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Byzantine query

[edit]

Hi there Jen! Haven't spoken in a while–I hope you're keeping well. A few editors and I have found ourselves trying to repair the Byzantine Empire FA, which has since deteriorated from its 2007 promotion.

Would you have any time/interest in improving its religion section? Your expertise there would be greatly appreciated; at the moment it's chalk full of massive quotes and all over the place. We're trying to keep a close eye on article size, so trimming might be needed (and perhaps warranted, the section is a little unwieldy atm). Best – Aza24 (talk) 04:07, 7 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Of course I will be happy to help in any way I can. I am a bit undependable this summer, going on and off line a lot, but I will make it a point to look at this one. I am pleased at the opportunity to do something for you for a change. Jenhawk777 (talk) 04:14, 7 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Oh MY! It is long and rambling, and I feel confident I can cover more in a more chronological fashion in less space. I will certainly give it a go. Give me a couple weeks. Would you like me to post it on the talk page before publication or would you be just as happy if I directly edit? Jenhawk777 (talk) 04:19, 7 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Feel free to directly edit, whatever's easiest really! Aza24 (talk) 05:12, 7 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I am already researching and writing in my sandbox. I will also pull what I can from what is already in the article. I will work in my sandbox, and then replace the whole section in the article at once, if that's okay. It's easier to keep up with what's been said and what hasn't that way. I'll get back to you! Jenhawk777 (talk) 05:25, 7 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Understood—Yes, that should work nicely. Thanks again for your help here! Aza24 (talk) 05:36, 7 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Happy to do it. Jenhawk777 (talk) 05:37, 7 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hey! I hope you don't feel steamrolled at all by this whole process. Your efforts were truly valuable and highly impressive in breadth, speed, coverage and nuance. I fear there are some slightly contradictory views on the ways forward with the article, but everyone just wants to help and I'm very optimistic for it. Did you know that the article has consistently been an FA since 2001? I believe its the oldest continuous FA, so hopefully we can get it in great shape for the next few decades :) – Aza24 (talk) 05:48, 12 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I expected contradictory views in some areas and had originally simply avoided including those, but some were requested, so I added those back. I hope you are all able to work through those. I assure you what I wrote is current. I have published nothing as of yet, but will work on references. Groan... This gives me hope for History of Christianity, so I'm glad I did it. I'm glad you're glad too! Jenhawk777 (talk) 15:41, 12 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, I think I am all done with all of it now, if you accept. I hope you are pleased with the result. Jenhawk777 (talk) 18:33, 12 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Byzantine Empire

[edit]

Hi Jenhawk777

I'm happy to hear you will be reviewing the religion section! Thanks for reaching out @Aza24. Some requests as you get into this

  • aim for three citations per sentence. I know this might not be practical as is the case with the other specialty topics, but minimum one per sentence. Kaldellis (2023) and Treadgold (1997) have written narrative histories which so you can use them if you can't find much else, though with this topic I'm not worried about that!
  • Once we are done with the article rewrite, we will then reassess how to reduce the word count. Which is to say don't worry about the word count but keep in mind we may move this content to main articles later and/or restructure the page and add split this content into periods.
  • There was a heading we recently removed that had uncited text "Relationship with Western Christendom" if you want to add that to your review
  • Use SFN for citations
  • I will be reviewing your rewrite and checking the sources for CLOP and alignment with the sources. I know you're an experienced editor so not a concern, but just a headsup if you see me editing your contributions.
  • Keep us updated either on the FAR talk page or the Articles Talk page

Question from Bomette (14:02, 22 August 2024)

[edit]

hello!! it's a pleasure for me to have you as my editing mentor ; not that i know you but anyways! i have a simple question how do you make a text blue and link-able (?) I've been struggling for a while now, so I've taken it as a chance to ask you away. Sorry if my question is simple and dumb haha!! --Bomette (talk) 14:02, 22 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Welcome! There are no dumb questions when getting started on Wikipedia. There is so much to learn here. I do recommend that you read as much of the info on the starting page as you can stomach. A link is easy to make, just put double brackets [ around something. It needs to be on Wikipedia, and it needs to be exactly as it is titled on Wikipedia. If you are using something in a sentence where the title doesn't fit exactly, you can still blue link. For instance, I am writing an article that I want to take FA called the History of Christianity so the WP title is in the first section, divided by an upright | slash, and then what I want to show up is in the second half, all with double brackets around it. Be sure to look at this in edit source so you can see clearly what I did. Have fun! Jenhawk777 (talk) 17:09, 22 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
